Construction Cost:
The cost of
the Meridian Credit Union Arena was $3,820,300 and the contract was awarded to
Brouwer Construction from St. Catharines. The ground breaking ceremony was
held Saturday, January 4, 2003 and was officially opened Saturday, September
27, 2003. The cost of the architectural and engineering services was
approximately $240,000. This service was provided by the Quartek
Group from Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Ice
Surface:
The surface
is 200 ft. x 85 ft.. The protective glass behind the nets is 6 ft. high
and 5/8" think and 4 ft. high and 1/2" thick at the middle
sections. Shock absorbent padding has been placed at all posts near the
benches. Safety netting has been installed at both ends of the ice
surface.
Change
Rooms:
Five
spacious rooms (net floor area of 3,125 ft2) can accommodate 20
players comfortably with individual washrooms and shower area in each
room. Two of the five rooms are handicapped accessible.
Referees
Room:
A large
change room for the referees can easily accommodate six individuals and
provides space for filing and report preparation.
Refrigeration
Plant:
The plant
houses a state of the art energy efficient system that uses two fifty horse
power compressors. The system has been designed to be able to
accommodate another 50 h.p. at a later date. The refrigeration plant is
totally independent from the refrigeration plant in the Centennial
Arena. The cooling medium for the under floor piping system is propylene
glycol.
Sound
System:
The arena
has been equipped with a digital sound system offering microphone and music
capabilities in the staff room, timekeepers box and music room. Speakers
have been installed above the side board glass for both ice and seating sound
coverage and in the lobby area.
Spectator
Seating:
The
bleacher area can accommodate approximately 500 people plus a substantial area
for standing room. There is also a warm viewing area that provides eight
windows overlooking the ice surface. Spectator seating is heated with
six gas fired infra red radiant independently controlled heaters.
Mechanical:
The lobby
and dressing room areas are equipped with air conditioning. An HRV
system was installed to provide excellent ventilation.
Lighting:
The
lighting system for the ice surface has a high and low feature. This low
feature reduces lighting by 35% providing energy savings and is ideal for use
during public skating and ice maintenance. The dressing rooms, washrooms
and a number of other rooms within the building are equipped with occupancy
sensors.
Resurfacer:
The arena
has its own resurfacer room and resurfacer. Having a separate
vehicle at both surfaces allows greater flexibility for scheduling and
provides a back up if a mechanical problem occurs.
Accessibility:
The arena
is equipped with an elevator for access to the top viewing area.
Skate
Changing:
Benches for
skate changing have been provided both in the warm viewing area and below the
bleachers area along the length of the ice surface.
Storage:
Storage
rooms have been provided for Minor Lacrosse and Figure Skating.
Other
Features:

facility contains 11,000 ft2 of protective rubber flooring

arena provides a very spacious lobby area with a concession area.

storage and preparation space

floor offers access to the music room. This room can also be used

at the top of the viewing area.
Parking:
145 new
parking spaces have been created. These spaces coupled with the existing
spaces in the front and side of the Centennial Arena offer a total of 252
spaces for the overall complex.
Courtyard:
A new
courtyard provides a nicely landscaped area and includes a water
feature. This courtyard can act as an extension of the meeting room for
special events.
